The Artist
Founder & Principal Artist, Blue Pilot Studio
Leon Stejko is a contemporary abstract painter and the founder of Blue Pilot Studio, a commercial art practice dedicated to creating evocative, site-specific art for corporate environments, interior design projects, and private collections. Guided by a philosophy of "quiet expressionism," Stejko’s work explores the balance between strength and serenity, using colour, texture, and form to transform spatial experiences.
A rich, multicultural background and a unique academic foundation inform Stejko’s artistic journey. Born and educated in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he earned a PhD in Materials Science, he later lived and worked in Brazil and New Zealand before settling in Sydney, Australia. This deep understanding of structural elements – combined with a successful multi-decade career as a graphic designer, illustrator, and art director – heavily influences his meticulous yet intuitive approach to painting.
Drawing inspiration from Wassily Kandinsky’s pioneering Der Blaue Reiter movement, Blue Pilot Studio represents a modern evolution of emotional expression through art. Working predominantly in acrylics on large-scale canvases, Stejko aims to build an atmosphere of mystery and deep, resonant feeling. His sophisticated, grounded colour palette is dominated by earthy browns and dark blues, punctuated by deliberate, energetic splashes of red, yellow, and green. For more intimate, smaller works, he expands his tactile exploration through watercolour, gel prints, and complex collage techniques.
Rather than overwhelming a space, Stejko’s paintings offer a contemplative, stabilising energy. His compositions reflect a life story shaped by resilience, adaptation, and a profound appreciation for renewal. Today, Stejko collaborates closely with designers, consultants, and collectors to deliver compelling visual narratives that elevate modern interiors and offer viewers a quiet, powerful moment of connection.
